Even with Reforms, Cubans emigrating
Cubans are heading out of the country at record levels even with the “reforms” taking place to help build a better economy as well as a safer country. The number of people leaving the country has not been this extreme since 1994 which is mostly remembered as the “Raft Crisis.” Most choosing to leave Cuba are heading to Mexico or the US to start their new lives on foreign soil.
While the new leader, Raul Castro who is brother to Fidel Castro has begun to pass new laws that would promote the economical reforms as well as social reforms he had promised, many feel that they are not enough to warrant them staying any longer in the country. The reforms that were completed by the new president include allowing citizens to carry cell phones in addition to other normal conveniences such as a microwave. While the reforms have made this modern technology available to Cubans, the economy has made it impossible for anyone to actually enjoy them. With the economy in a horrible state, people can not purchase the advances which make critics wonder if the reforms were really just a front to make the country look like it was advancing when in fact it was not.
Yhosvany Carmona who lived in Cuba before emigrating commented, “It’s just a big façade to impress the people. Who are these people who can not afford to buy computers, cell phones and DVDs? They are the same people who could afford to buy them on the black market before.”
